While thinking of what to write for this week entry, I came across this video on youtube and decided to share it with everyone.
After watching it, i bet you are wondering why the main guy has an outer layer of scales. well, same sentiment too. I showed this video to a number of friends and most of them found it to be a good commercial, though i have one who found it super disgusting.
Background: Nike Pro Combat is the feature product in “Alter Ego”, a television commercial featuring Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson(the guy who is no.28). The commercial is currently being aired all over in America.
Peterson’s dynamic talents and powerful on-field persona are portrayed in “Alter Ego”, but it’s the image of last season’s National Football League’s rushing leader sitting in front of his locker at game’s end that provide the title for the ad. A 3-D overlay treatment of the distinctive Nike Pro Combat deflex pattern on Peterson’s skin is symbolic of an implied transformational experience for athletes who wear the product, and creates a visually compelling closing to the ad.
Evaluation: In my opinions, this has got to be one of the best commercials that i watched so far. The commercial has achieved the three objectives – Pathos, Ethos and Logos.
The 1:33min commercial captures the energy, power and speed of football. Besides that, it also captures the emotions of the people present in the match such as the disappointment of the rival team members and the cheerleader. The background music was absolutely well-suited for the entire commercial. And the film was shot in the black-and-white mode, probably to create a historic feel. Historic in the sense that the part where Peterson scored the goal was a moment to be remembered in years to come.
Adrian Lewis Peterson is a professional football running back for the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League. It is a smart move of nike to feature Peterson as he is highly popular in America. Also, Americans adored their professional American football league. Hence the probability of making their target audience to notice this commercial is really high. All in all, this commercial focuses upon using celebrity power, fame, popularity to promote and gain recognition for the product.
i have to agree with your friend who thinks this commercial is disgusting! hahaha. ewww, scales on our skin :X
but i can’t deny that it is quite a successful advertisement (: the persuasion appeal is achieved and i’m sure sports enthusiasts will be pretty intrigued after watching this (:
and yes, i agree that the choice of sports celebrities is also an important factor contributing to the success of the add (:
thanks for the comment babe!
haha. at least after being disgusted by the commercial, you will remember about it, which means the company got what it wanted – your attention. =)
i absolutely agree with your last point. as using popular celebrities is always a plus factor in gaining attention.
I agree with you to a certain extent that the choice of using sport celebrities will increase the awareness of potential customers especially fans of these sport celebrities. It will be a good form of communication and is also one of the most important key factor in marketing.
However i am not a fan of him, i usually would like to see interesting advertisement that captures my attention. The film was shot in black and white which make me lose my interest in watching it and the brand was given only at the end of the advertisement.
I would rate the commercial 6 out of 10 as it does not interest me.
thanks for the comment babe!
like i’ve said before, everyone has different views about a particular issue.
for instance, for you, the black and white view made you lost interest in the commercial while for me, i think the effect made the commercial better and more interesting. haha.
It took me 2 times to watch the video and for me to realise what the advertisement was promoting about. The first thought that came to my mind was ” Is nike promoting american football?” I guess i was wrong.
I must admit that i could actually feel the actual intensity of myself being in the game as how the advertisement had protrayed itself to be. It definitely hooked my attention and it made me even more curious on what exactly they are promoting about.
Yet another inspirational video by nike again.
Hi georgina dearie! Keep up the good work
Here’s what I think about your post:
Most feel that this advertisement appeal mainly to sports lovers, especially those who are fans of American football. However, the historic touch-down aside, it is the usage of those visually-startling scales on a celebrity that shocks, repulses and might have even elicited creative approval from the diverse category of global TV viewers worldwide.
Fascination with this unorthodox treatment manages to bridge the gap between the target groups of this advertisement. It is a unifying effort that symbolizes the bonding power of sports. I feel that Nike has done an excellent job in drawing in viewers of all interests. The team has managed to fuse sophistication with the rugged grit of the sporting field. This is definitely an advertisement with glamour, and not forgetting, edge.
thanks for the comment dear!
haha. just like you, i think that nike has done an excellent job too.
all in all, the shocking and repulsing image really did help in gaining attention for the commercial.
hey!
i agree with jane that i didnt get the ad when i first saw it. it took me a long long pause before i realised…”oh..nike..”
yet another nike ad by famous sportsmen. however, who is that guy again? like serena, i have no particular idol in any sports. this ad really appeals to fans of the american football but not the rest of the people out there who maybe dont mind seeing regular people in cool nike shoes and be motivated to buy it.
personally, i love beer adver, dont cha think? and everyone loves it. look at hein, tiger, and even guinness. regular people loving beer, excited about beer and make us, viewers, love watching them. haha.
cheers!
haha love your comment melissa! hahaha. i can totally imagine how excited you are just like the people in the commerical for the heininken beer!
Quite a captivating advert i must say!
